The world’s first Automated Teller Machine (ATM),a technology which brought transformation in the way people obtained and used cash, on Tuesday clocked 50 years.
As a tribute to the golden anniversary, Barclays transformed the ATM at its Enfield branch into gold, added a commemorative plaque and placed a red carpet in front for its users.
The original ATM was the brainchild of Scottish inventor Shepherd-Barron, and was commissioned by Barclays to create six cash dispensers, the first of which was installed at Enfield. English actor Reg Varney, who starred in the British TV comedy show “On The Buses”, was the first person to withdraw cash from the new machine.
The ATM was designed to transform people’s ability to manage their finances by giving customers access to cash outside bank branch opening hours.
Despite the rise in other new technologies such as online and mobile banking, the ATM remains popular 50 years on. Now there are an estimated three million cash machines across the globe with some 70,000 cash machines in the UK alone which dispensed 175 billion pounds in 2016.
This month also marked 30 years since Barclays introduced the debit card to the UK, on June 3 1987.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari is on life support and that he has been suffering from voice impairment in a West-End London Hospital since June 6.
He also dismissed a purported audio message of the president greeting people for the just celebrated Eid-el-Fitri in Hausa language as “absolute lies.”
“No doubt, the audio message was only a damage-control strategy aimed at further deceiving Nigerians,” he said.
Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, June 28, the governor noted that there had been no official statement on the health status and whereabout of the president since he travelled abroad for treatment 53 days ago.
Fayose, who issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the presidency to discountenance his claims, threatened to reveal further details on the hospital if there was no official statement from the government.
“Today, it makes 53 days since our president left Nigeria to attend to his health challenges abroad. No official information as to his whereabouts and his state of health.
‘Buhari Will Complete His Tenure In Good Health’ – Osinbajo
“Like every other Nigerians, I do not wish the president dead, I have therefore maintained dignified silence since we were told that the president embarked on his second medical trip abroad this year.
“However, the recorded audio message which was released by the Presidency as the president’s Ramadan message to Nigerians necessitated my setting the records straight today.
“The audio message does not represent the truth as our President does not only have voice impairment, he has been on life-support since June 6, 2017, at a West-End, London Hospital.”
The governor revealed that the First Lady, Aisha, was not allowed to see her husband during her last visit to the United Kingdom if only she would be courageous enough to admit.
He said, “Only three Nigerians who are of the president’s cabal are allowed access to the president. I will keep their identities for now.

“Anyone with contrary claim should produce the president to Nigerians within the next 48 hours. I want to say emphatically that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has not spoken to the president in the last one month. I expect him to prove me wrong.”

A heartbroken dad who can no longer pay his sick daughter’s medical bills is now preparing for her death – by taking her to play in her future grave.
Zhang Xin Lei, two, was diagnosed with a blood condition when she was just two-months-old.
The family, who live in China, have spent more than £11,000 on her medical treatment – but the money has now run out.
After realising there was nothing more he could do, her devastated dad Zhang Liyong decided his only option was to prepare her for death.
He said: “I could only come up with this idea of bringing her to play at this place.
“This is where she will rest in peace.
“All I can do is accompanying her every day.”
Liyong lies in the grave cuddling his young daughter while her mum, who is pregnant, sits nearby.
The family have borrowed money from friends, but the offers of financial help have now run out.
Zhang Xin Lei was diagnosed with Thalassaemia, an inherited condition which affects oxygen in the blood, when she was just two-months-old. It requires lifelong treatment including medication and blood transfusions.
Without close monitoring and regular treatment it can cause serious organ damage and can be life-threatening.
In an emotional interview, her tearful mum Deng Min said: “We have been driven into a corner.
“There is no other option.”

Angry graduates of the Ijaw and Ilaje ethnicity on Wednesday, June 28, while protesting an alleged Chevron’s refusal to convert their indigenes who had completed their 18-month graduate training programme clashed with soldiers and policemen at the Ekpan premises of Chevron Nigeria Limited in Uvwie Council area near Warri, Delta State.
They decried the manner they were maltreated by the security team on the instruction of the company.
President of KOMBOT-Egbema/Gbaramatu Graduates Association, Yabrade Moses, and his counterpart from the National Association of Ilaje Graduates, Ikuesan Ademola, said they had staged the protest to express their displeasure over Chevron’s failure to regularise the employment status of its trainees.
They said the trainees were part of Chevron’s VTP5, OPT2 and VTP6 programmes, and as part of the programme, they were supposed to be converted to full staff. However, the company had bluntly refused to give the trainees employment alongside their colleagues from other parts of the country.
[PHOTO] ‘My Gang Forced Me To Join Them’ – Italian Kidnapper Arrested In Delta Confesses
“The protest is all about our indigenes that are working in Chevron’s Ogere training; the VTP5, OPT2 and VTP6. For a training of 18 months, they have been kept stagnant for about 4 years now, since March 2013. This is slavery.
“While those taken from the national, at Agbami, have been converted to permanent staff, those taken from our communities are not converted yet, using them as cheap labour or what we call modern day slavery because should anything happen to any of them, Chevron cannot be held liable. This is the major means through which our people can be taken into Chevron.
“The programme was designed to take our people into Chevron, but the company is trying to change the goalpost in the middle of the game. If they had listened to us it would all have ended in dialogue; to see how the people would be converted, discuss and give a time frame they would be converted and see how those on waiting list could be taken, probably see how they could give us our quota from the employments they’ve done so we can get our slots for us to fill those positions.”

They said no amount of intimidation would stop the people from protesting and demanding what rightly belongs to them for the company’s operations in their domain.

The hausa broadcast message from President Muhammadu Buhari in which he felicitated with Nigerians especially Muslims on the occassion of Eid-el-Fitr has been described as a near fatal Public Relation disaster by a former Media Aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe.
Okupe took to his Facebook page to comment on the audio message that has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians.
Eid-el-Fitr: Criticisms Trail Buhari’s Audio Message In Hausa
Below is what he wrote;
‘I believe the voice is the voice of PMB and not any phoney laboratory creation.
I also believe strongly that PMB never intended the statement to be used as a direct message to nation. It’s one of two possibilities
The media handlers in desperation to dispel unwarranted rumours of the president “death” or extreme incapacitation, arranged for a correspondent of BBC Hausa service to record a message for their station to be related to their listeners. The claim that it was an interview cannot be correct. An interview is a question and answer session not a monologue. What question was PMB answering when he said ” I Muhammadu Buhari….”
The other possibility which I consider to be more probable is that someone, maybe Garba Shehu, requested a message from PMB. Because he was talking with an aide who is a notherner, he spoke to him in Hausa expecting that this will naturally be translated to English and issued out officially from the Presidency.
Thereafter before the official process could be concluded someone has forwarded an advance copy to BBC Hausa service, and journalists being who they are with insatiable desire for scoops and breaking news, released it instant for maximum effects.
No matter how we look at it, sheer desperation has caused someone to commit a near fatal Public Relation disaster. Alas, the President suffers an incalculable damage for that but
I am sure the handlers have learnt yet another painful lesson.’

Reno Omokri, former Senior Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to watch his utterances following his recent attack on the former President.
Omokri insisted that Kanu was wrong to have labeled former President, Goodluck Jonathan as weak and incompetent.

He said Kanu must learn what leadership entails.
He wrote on Facebook, “In my widely published article advising Ndigbo, I said the Igbo often mistake discretion for weakness.
‘Jonathan Was Not Weak, He Was An Exemplary Leader’ -Fani-Kayode Replies Nnamdi Kanu
“Nnamdi Kanu proves my point! Calling Dr. Goodluck Jonathan weak and incompetent is just a manifestation of what I wrote about.
“Nnamdi Kanu needs to understand something about leadership. Leadership is a platform that gives you the opportunity to increase your influence or reduce it until it is eliminated.
“Upon his release, public sympathy for him increased his influence. The successful sit at home further increased it. However, his utterances since then have been steadily reducing his influence.
“I know Chief Femi Fani-Kayode very well. He will soon hear the things Nnamdi Kanu said about the Yorubas.
“He has already heard about the things Nnamdi Kanu said about Jonathan. It will not be very long before Nnamdi Kanu loses one of his most valiant non Igbo supporter.
“Apparently, what the Nigerian government couldn’t do to Nnamdi Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu is using his own mouth to do to himself!”

A 22-year-old Nigerian woman attempting to migrate into Europe via the harsh Sahara Desert survived after being abandoned by traffickers for 10 days.
The International Organisation for Migration said the woman, given the nickname Adaora, was the only female among the survivors of a rescue mission on May 28.
“She left Nigeria in early April hoping for a better future in Europe.
“There were 50 migrants on the pick-up truck when it left Agadez for Libya, but only six are still alive today,” Giuseppe Loprete, Niger Chief of Mission for IOM, said.
Recounting her ordeal, the Nigerian survivor said: “We were in the desert for 10 days. After five days, the driver abandoned us.
“He left with all of our belongings, saying he was going to pick us up in a couple of hours, but he never did,” she recalled.
During the next two days, 44 of the migrants died which persuaded the six left to start walking to look for help.
“We had to drink our own pee to survive,”  said the woman now in an IOM camp in Niamey, Niger.
She had left Nigeria with two close female friends, who both died in the desert.
“They were too weak to keep going,” she sadly remembers. “We buried a few, but there were just too many to bury and we didn’t have the strength to do it,” Adaora adds.
“I couldn’t walk anymore. I wanted to give up,” she recalls.
Two other migrants carried her until a truck driver picked them up and took them to local authorities who then alerted IOM staff in Dirkou in the Agadez Region of north-eastern Niger.
By the time the six survivors reached IOM’s transit centre in Dirkou, Adaora was unconscious.
She received medical assistance, and once recovered, she gave a detailed account of her experience to both the authorities and IOM staff. Two of the other migrants from the group went back with IOM staff and the authorities to find the bodies and identify the victims.
After having received medical assistance at IOM’s transit centres in both Dirkou and Agadez, Adaora is currently recovering at IOM’s transit centre for migrants in Niamey, awaiting her imminent voluntary return to Nigeria.
Adaora says she had no idea what the route was going to be like, otherwise she would have never left Nigeria. Going back, she wants to continue her work as a nurse. “I think it’s important we all assist each other when we are in need,” she says.

Pope Francis on Wednesday, June 28, in a renewed call for social justice, said that older people should be made to work less or retire early to create employment for younger generations.
“There is an urgency for a new human social pact, a new social pact for work that should reduce working hours for those at the end of their working lives, to create work for the young, who have a right and a duty to work,’’ Francis said.
Speaking during an audience with Catholic-linked Italian trade union CISL, Francis said that “a society that forces old people to work for too long and forces an entire generation of young people not work is stupid and short-sighted’’.
‘You Will Lose Your Job If You Don’t Obey Me’ -Pope Francis Tells Nigerian Priests
Francis, who is 80, also criticised so-called “golden pensions,’’ which granted generous payments to selected categories of Italian workers, and said work must be accompanied by a “healthy culture of leisure which is not laziness, but a human necessity.’’
A critic of capitalist excess, the pope has often decried Europe’s youth unemployment crisis, saying it discourages young people from starting a family.
However, many economists denied that pushing older people out of the labour market would create jobs for the young.

The Hotel
Personnel of the Nigerian Army allegedly invaded a hotel, Little Palace, located in Ishawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State before turning it into its operational base.
The management of the hotel accused the Army of forcefully taking over its facility.
It alleged that the manager of the hotel, Friday Imhanzuria, was arrested and detained for over two months at the Nigerian Navy Base, Apapa, for demanding the reopening of the hotel.
The counsel for the hotel, Moses Okosun, said although the incident happened sometime in July 2015, efforts by the management to seek audience with the military authorities did not yield result until February 2017, when the Army said the Lagos State Government authorised the use of the hotel.
Okosun said when he wrote the government seeking explanation, the state denied knowledge of authorisation, demanding proofs that it gave the order.

He said the hotel was considering suing the government for damages, adding that losses running into millions of naira had been incurred.
PUNCH gathered that Little Palace was one of the two hotels on Tapa Street, Oke-Oko, Ishawo, a community under militant siege.
It was learnt that as the clash between security operatives and the militants intensified, many residents fled their homes, just as the two hotels in the area were shut sometime in June 2015.
It was learnt that when the military entered the community, the two hotels were occupied and used as military bases.
However, the owner of the second hotel met the authorities after a month and his property was vacated by soldiers.

The manager of Little Palace Hotel, Imhanzuria, said when he approached the military as well, he was arrested.
Imhanzuria said while the military continued to stay in Little Palace, they returned the second hotel to the owner, who had political connections.
The hotel lawyer, Okosun, said that the soldiers, after converting the hotel into their operational base, consumed assorted wines and food stored in the facility.
