DO NOT FORGET THE WORD - 2PETER 1:1-16, DEUTERONOMY 6:7-9
“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth”2 PETER 1:12
Peter knew he would soon leave this world. He therefore gave final instructions before his death (verse 14). He taught that Christians never finish growing spiritually, but always remain in process. Also, he taught that Christians must be on guard against false teachers who will infiltrate the church, by bringing to remembrance all that they have heard and learnt from him regarding the gospel of the Lord.
There is constant need for us to be reminded of the truth of God’s word which we have learnt in order to prevent the danger of forgetfulness. It is possible for humans to forget what they don’t hear or read often. God admonished the Israelites to keep their hearts diligently and not forget the things which their eyes have seen of the Lord and his leading.(Deuteronomy 4:9). He charged them to keep it as a sign upon their doorpost and gates. This is to serve as a constant reminder. By so doing, they will not be easily swayed away by the values and teachings of the strange nations around them.
We should ensure we constantly immerse ourselves in the word of God and reminding ourselves of its truths all the time. We have a more sure word in the Bible than the teachings and practice of the world that surrounds us daily. This Word of God is the antidote to forgetfulness and heresy. This will help us from not being derailed in our journey into eternal life (IIPeter 1:11)
