TEACH YOUR CHILDREN THE WORD – DEUTERONOMY 6:1-25, PROVERBS 22:6
“And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children, and shall talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up”  Deuteronomy 6:7

Parenting goes beyond simply giving birth to children is a lifetime engagement. It is the process of caring for your children. The responsibility entails continuous teaching of the child to imbibe good home training, moral values and Godly upbringing to make the child a total man. The concern of raising children is both physical and spiritual. One of the purposes of marriage is for the procreation of Godly children that will be brought up in the fear and way of the Lord, for the praise and glory of his name.
God gave Israel teachings and commands that would help them remain faithful to him. He thus charged them to pass on their faith to their children. This is God’s instructions about parenting. It is necessary that they teach their children every time and at every opportunity because the children were young and hadn’t even been born when the commandments were given to Moses and all the wonders God did for the Israelites needed to be preserved as their history. Therefore teaching the children and retelling their history reminded people that God had been faithful to them. It also gives the children a great sense of family heritage. The day by day, minute by minute and all time teaching about God and his commandment are to ensure that they do not forget. It will also help the teaching become a part of the children. “What you hear often stays more relevant in the heart”
Parents who fail in the assignment of parenting will face the anger of God. Eli was condemned because he was not firm in the training of his children (I Samuel 3:12-13). The process of teaching is endless. It is not a regimented classroom style. From the rising from bed till the dark of night, a parent continues to teach his children. It is the most informal method of teaching and children grab what forms the basis of their belief from what they were taught by their parents. It takes diligence and consistency. Parents are a child’s first teacher and whatever lessons they receive stays with them for life. Through the words, deeds and action of the parents, children consciously and unconsciously learn. Parents must therefore not be slothful. They also must set good standards, both in secular engagements and in spiritual matters-payer, study of the word of God, service to God, etc and be a shining example to their children. Parents must consistently put their children in prayer that they imbibe the word of God and stay on the right track of life. David asked of the Lord, “And give to Solomon my son, a perfect heart to keep thy commands and testimonies and thy statutes, and to do all these things..” ( I Chronicles 29:19).Children also have a duty to  take the teachings of their parents and abide in the commandments of God. If they do this, length of days will be their portion and they will prosper (Proverbs 3:1-2, 7:2)
Parents should not allow their work or pursuit in life prevent them from carrying out this Godly assignment committed to them. Don’t be too pre-occupied to train your children in the way of the Lord. Neither should you abdicate such duties to maids, school teachers or someone else. If you do, you will be guilty of disobedience. Proverbs 22:6 says, “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.
