NIGERIAN MONITOR BREAKING NEWS

Prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has alleged that some state governors cannot pay the proposed N30,000 minimum wage because they are not blocking the leakages going on within their governments.
According to him, only Kano State has an anti-corruption commission.
Falana, who said this today when he was featured on a breakfast show on Arise Television, said the fight cannot be limited to the federal government alone.
He lamented what he called the negligence of state governments to join the federal government in its fight against corruption.
His words:
“In line with section 15, subsection 5 of the constitution, the provision says the Nigerian state shall abolish corrupt practices and abuse of office.
“That does not mean the federal government. The Nigerian state, including the federal government, state government and local government. But apart from the federal government, no state in Nigeria is fighting corruption.
“That’s why some of the state governments are saying they cannot pay minimum wage because they are not blocking the leakages going on. Kano state is the only state, this may interest you, has an anti-corruption commission. No other state in Nigeria.
“In fact, access to information is denied by all state governments in Nigeria apart from Ekiti state. Only Ekiti state government, under Fayemi, has adopted the freedom of information act.
“So, it’s difficult in any state to ask for information with respect to public affairs. So, you can’t just single out the federal government fighting corruption in a country where majority of state governments are not bothered.
“So, it will not be fair to limit the fight against corruption to the federal government. As a country, Nigeria has not decided to fight corruption.”

The president released the statement on his personal Twitter, @MBuhari, writing that those living in the North-East will testify.
The war against terrorism in the country will be won, he wrote.
In spite of the challenges we’ve had, people in the North East know that we have recorded remarkable improvement in the fight against Boko Haram. There is no doubt that we will fully overcome these challenges and win the war against terrorism in Nigeria.

Former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said his role in next month’s presidential election, would be that of a vigilant watchman who will not hesitate to raise the alarm whenever there is any irregularities.
Obasanjo stated this while addressing a delegation of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), led by its presidential standard-bearer, Yabaji Sani, on Thursday, in Abeokuta.
In a statement signed by the Director, Media and Publicity of YY Sani Presidential Campaign Organisation, Pam Ibrahim, the former president further enjoined Nigerians to engage in what he called “participatory democracy” in order to vote in credible and patriotic leaders.
“It is undemocratic, the attitude of some politicians who heat up the polity by undermining and denigrating other Nigerians through thuggery and harassment of innocent citizens.
“My role in Nigerian politics would be that of a watchman who is expected to be vigilant and raise an alarm whenever it is necessary,” Obasanjo said.

Yusuph Olaniyonu, the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to Senate President,Bukola Saraki has today stated that if there is any doctored version of the Christmas Day radio interview by his boss, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, who presented it should be asked where he got it from.
Accusing Mohammed as being the author of such a doctored recording, Olaniyonu in a statement in Abuja, stated that the radio stations were simply instructed to do a repeat broadcast of the interview following the requests by stakeholders at various meetings held by the Senate President around the state.
“Nobody produced another tape or instructed anybody to edit any part of the tape and nothing like that was done. That is why the same instruction was passed to all the stations, including Harmony FM, which is under the supervision of Mr. Lai Mohammed and the Sobi FM owned by an APC gubernatorial aspirant. The Sobi FM did not air the repeat broadcast because they said they had another Programme scheduled for that Sunday morning.
“On my way to Pategi town in Kwara North Senatorial District that Sunday morning, I listened to the repeat broadcast on the car stereo and the area concerning the Offa case was clearly there. If there was any plan to doctor or edit the tape, would we do such a thing with Mr. Mohammed’s Harmony FM or propose that to Sobi FM whose position is well known to us? So, if Mohammed suddenly created and produced a recording of the interview different from what was repeated by the four radio stations on December 30, 2018, then he should be asked how and where he got it”, Olaniyonu stated.
He added that it was good that Mohammed at least admitted that Dr. Saraki donated N10 million to people in Offa but that the money was meant for the traders that lost goods in the inferno that razed the market in the town and not for the victims of the robbery incident.
“I remember as a member of the Senate President’s Delegation to the Olofa of Offa’s palace to commiserate with the people on the sad incident of the robbery that it was during that visit that Mrs. McCarthy, the secretary of the Offa Development Union (ODU) raised the issue of the earlier incident on the market fire incident and Dr. Saraki promised that N10m would be made available the following day.
“The question people should ask the Minister is: How much has he ever donated to provide succour for the people of Offa for whatever purpose? He is only trying to draw political capital from the sad occurrences that happened to his own people. We are not unmindful of the fact that he continued to talk about the Offa incident as a way of playing cheap politics on the misfortune that befell some people. We urge him to move on to talking about what development projects he has brought to Offa as a member of the Federal Executive Council representing Kwara State”, he added.
The aide to the Senate President noted that while the information Minister continues to grand-stand over a dubious and Pyrrhic victory recorded by his party in a bye- election in which he led security agencies to inflict violence on his people, the results had only produced an illegitimate legislator who is largely shunned and viewed with scorn by members of his community.
“We are not surprised that a ‘visiting’ politician like Mr. Mohammed found it strange that Dr. Saraki held meetings with canvassers and stakeholders across the local government areas during the Christmas holiday. As a grassroots mobilizer, this is what he has always done since he first contested in an election in 2003. Well, a Lagos based, ‘seasonal’ politician like the minister would not know. Now, he should know that the electioneering campaign in Kwara State is always done on ward to ward basis and not by staying in Abuja or the state capital. As a matter of fact, the campaign is yet to begin.
“At this point, Mr. Mohammed should tell the public which faction of APC he belongs to in Kwara State because the last time we checked, he is a member of the Bolarinwa faction which has been declared illegal and all its activities and candidates nullified by the Court. He should let us know if he has now joined the Balogun-Fulani faction or as he is fond of doing, he will simply stay in Lagos and be a poll observer in the coming elections. As he struggles to answer the above questions, let it be known that this will be my last word on this issue”, Olaniyonu stated.

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank today gave the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee, a 72-hour ultimatum to call President Muhammadu Buhari to order.
Frank made the call over Buhari’s alleged “gross violation of the recently signed peace accord by presidential candidates towards the forthcoming 2019 general elections.”
He said the failure to make Buhari to respect the peace accord within the stipulated period would force the “opposition political parties to pull out of the peace accord and subsequently direct their supporters to massively resist the ongoing aggression against them.”
In a signed statement, Frank said the call became imperative due to the “ongoing campaign of terror against leaders of opposition political parties aimed at actualizing a wicked conspiracy already hatched between the agents of the Buhari administration, security forces and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to brazenly rig the 2019 general elections.”
He stated that the alleged “ongoing crackdown against top members of the main opposition political party – the Peoples Democratic Party – grossly negates the spirit and letters of the accord – “as there can be no peace without justice, equity and fairness.”
Frank described the “ongoing use of the police and anti-graft agencies to hound prominent members of the PDP as an act of aggression that cannot be further tolerated as the elections draw near.”
He stated that the “intimidation and hounding of key opposition figures across the country and the attempts to deny opposition parties access to legitimate finances by anti-graft and security agencies show that the APC and Buhari have begun to violate the tenets of the peace accord few weeks after it was signed.”
The former APC spokesperson insisted that “it is now clear that the President and his party are out to rig the 2019 polls, or in the alternative, refuse to respect the will of Nigerians which is to hand over the reins of power to the eventual winner of the poll, should he be defeated as he is sure to be.”
He said that “top presidential aides are currently boasting that they already have results of elections that has not been conducted in their kitty with which they will declare the President and all APC’s candidates vying for various offices across the country winners irrespective of the actual results of the next polls.”
He lamented that the Nigeria Police was leading Buhari’s onslaught against the opposition ahead of the polls while the entire security apparatus of the country has shamefully bought into the plot to upturn the will of the people and rob the opposition candidates of victory.
Frank further added that the “illegal extension of the tenure of the current Service Chiefs and the planed elongation of the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, speaks volume about the intention of the present administration to use the nation’s security forces to rig the February elections and illegally perpetuate itself in power.”
He said that the “siege on Senator Dino Melaye’s house by the police, the unlawful detention of activist, Deji Adeyanju, and the harassment and intimidation of businessmen believed to be sympathetic to the cause of the opposition is a clear violation of the peace accord at this pre-election stage.” He noted that failure by the Abdulsalami’s peace committee and members of the international community to prevail on Buhari to allow for free, fair and credible elections in the country will lead to a catastrophic upheaval never witnessed in any of the African continent.
He described the much trumpeted “integrity” of Buhari as phony because events have since shown him to have encouraged, condoned and perpetuated corrupt activities while deceiving gullible Nigerians that he is an anti-corruption czar.
He wondered how a President that has corrupted the nation’s governance system and security forces – preparatory to use them to rig the forthcoming elections – continue to lay claim to integrity.
“How can a President that has sanctioned the diversion of state funds to finance his election say he has integrity? How can a President that is using state-funded security forces to intimidate, harass, detain and incarcerate members of the opposition say he has integrity? How can a President who continuously disdains and disregards lawful judicial pronouncements lay claims to integrity?
“How can a President who has ordered his men to monitor banks and block the source of funds for opposition political parties say he has integrity?
“Let the Presidency be warned. Nigerians are ready to take their destiny in their hands should the government not conduct itself properly to free the country from his clueless and inept administration.
“Any attempt to rig, truncate, or declare the next presidential election inconclusive – like the case of Osun State – or refuse to relinquish power after defeat would be tantamount to reversing the massive democratic gains the country has recorded since 1999.
“However, Nigerians are well prepared to resist any such draconian actions with the last drop of their blood,” he said.

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to allow the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, retire on January 15.
The party said this was one of the ways the President could convince Nigerians and the international community about his promise to have free, fair and acceptable elections in 2019.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan stated this while fielding questions from journalists in Abuja on Wednesday at the party secretariat.
Ologbondiyan said the police force as an institution had many officers that were capable of leading the NPF, hence no need to extend the tenure of the IG.
He said,
“One of the ways to demonstrate or show that he (President Buhari) is committed to free, fair and credible elections, is not to extend the tenure of the IG, who is due for retirement this month.
“He has said that he is committed to having transparent elections. He needs to tell Nigerians by his actions, and not merely with words of mouth.”
There are insinuations making the rounds that the Presidency was plotting to extend the tenure of Idris ahead of 2019 general elections.

Femi Fani-Kayode has called Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka an agent of Satan after the latter endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office.
Mbaka had claimed that if God was against Buhari, He would have allowed him to die.
In his new year message, the clergyman said Buhari remained the best presidential candidate.
“Among all the Presidential aspirants, Buhari stands in the best position in winning the presidential election,” Mbaka had said.
Reacting to Mbaka’s endorsement, Fani-Kayode described the cleric as an agent of Satan.

“If God does not want Buhari he could have died – Father Mbaka.

According to a statement attributed to the governor of the Kaduna state, Governor Aminu Masari, nobody is safe in the state.
Governor Masari said this during the opening ceremony of an extraordinary security meeting in Katsina, where he lamented that the state was under siege by bandits, armed robbers and kidnapped.
“The citizens are on a daily basis being harassed by bandits and kidnappers that are on rampage in the state.
“The Katsina Government organised this one-day joint security and stakeholders meeting to proffer solutions to the state’s current insecurity challenge.
“Our state is currently under serious siege by armed robbers, kidnappers and armed bandits who arrest rural people at will and demand ransom, which if not paid, results in the killing their victims.
“The people of Katsina in the 34 local governments now sleep with one eye closed and the other opened.
“Our state is in a dangerous situation. Travellers are afraid of being stopped on the highway and arrested by kidnappers who demand ransom,” Masari said.
Masari said the situation was so bad that some thieves stole some electrical equipment near the Government House at the Government Reserved Area in Katsina, The Punch reports.
“I am calling on all stakeholders to come out with solutions that will assist the security agencies to discharge their duties,” he said
The governor urged the stakeholders not hide any criminal, and reveal vital information about criminals during the meeting.
“This time around, we should be able to make sacrifices that will make our state safe and will allow people to go about their lawful business without fear of being arrested by armed bandits and kidnappers.
NAN reports that soldiers, the Police, Department of Security Service and other security outfits and traditional rulers attended the meeting.
