Alleged N400m Fraud: Court Closes Metuh’s Case In His Absence

Posted: 25 May 2018 01:15 PM PDT

FOLLOWING the absence of the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh and was not represented in court by any counsel, the Federal High Court in Abuja, handling the N400 million money laundering charge against the former PDP spokesman yesterday, closed his case.

The trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, in a bench ruling on an application by the prosecution counsel, Sylvanus Tahir seeking an order of the court closing the case of the first defendant (Metuh) said the court had adjourned the matter till yesterday for the cross-examination of the 11th Defence witness, Oladeji Bamidele and expressed worry over the absence of the first defendant and his counsel in court.

Abang said the court had, on January 25, 2018 granted Metuh’s application dated January 19, 2018 to call additional seven witnesses to the nine he had already called and ordered that the seven witnesses should be in court at all times to give evidence, as the court will not grant any other adjournment in the matter at the instance of the first defendant.

‘Why People Are Resigning From My Administration – Bauchi Governor, Mohammed Abubakar

Posted: 25 May 2018 12:45 PM PDT

The Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, has explained reasons why people are resigning their appointments from his administration.

His deputy, Nuhu Gidado, resigned on Wednesday; and before then, three other top officials had resigned.

Mr Abubakar gave reasons for the development in a brief chat with State House correspondents after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

Q: Why did your deputy resign, what transpired between the two of you?

A: What transpired is in the letter of the deputy and I think people should read that letter. Read the entire letter and you will see that there was nothing bad that transpired between us. His final paragraph is that he remains loyal to his leader and his brother. In my response I eulogised him and wished him the best in his future endeavour and assured him of the support of the good people of Bauchi State. There was no problem whatsoever.

Q: Why was it easy for you to accept his resignation?

A: The word resignation connotes a will on the part of the person who has offered. He offered his letter willingly and there is no way you can force him to accept an employment when the time has come for him to look elsewhere.

Q: How was the working relationship between you two?

A: We had the most fantastic working relationship. In his words and you can ask him, he has said several times that he is the most pampered deputy governor in Nigeria.

Q: From what we are hearing, three other persons have left your government. Why are people leaving your government?

A: Because I have come to Bauchi State to ensure change and change is very very difficult for people to accept.

People are used to a certain way of doing business and I have come to change that way of doing business. Because, that way was destroying Bauchi State. So, we had to put a stop to it, we had to bring Bauchi State out of the dungeon. I give people a chance and if you think you can go at my pace you stay and if you can’t go at my pace you resign.

Q: So did your deputy resign because he couldn’t go at your pace and are we expecting more resignation?

A: I don’t know.

Q: The spokesman to the deputy governor said on television that he resigned because he was not being treated as part of the government?

A: I see. I think he was wrong. Go to the House of Assembly and check, I went on official leave twice since I took over and each time I transmitted a letter to the House of Assembly making him the acting governor of Bauchi. Moreover, I have him in the most important ministry, the ministry of education, where I have been allocating the largest share of the budget of Bauchi State since 2008. That should answer your question.

‘Why I Told Linda Ikeji To Forget About Marriage And Get Pregnant’ – Charly Boy

Posted: 25 May 2018 11:50 AM PDT

Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has explained why he told popular blogger, Linda Ikeji, to forget about marriage.

Recall that the blogger broke the news of her pregnancy early this week and it has generated comments on various platforms.

Posting from his Instagram handle @areafada1, Charly Boy said, “For those brainless cells who couldn’t grasp why I told Linda Ikeji to forget about marriage, they don’t make men like they used to. Most young men are just looking for someone to pay their bills. Linda has been burnt so many times by useless wayo men parading themselves as prospective husbands. Most good men are already taken. Most men don’t have the confidence to live with an already made woman. Most women desire a very strong man, who can take charge and take care.

“Marriage very soon will no longer be fashionable because most people can’t cope. Marriage is a good thing, if you’re lucky, but it’s not for everybody.”

He added, “One of my daughters has been a single mother after leaving a very abusive marriage. She is the best mum I know and doing well for herself. Marriage can only work for two people who understand that it is a lot of discipline and hard work. It’s not a tea party. Even some so called “Men of God” can’t hold down a marriage.

“I have managed to survive almost 40 years with the same woman — no be sey e sweet like dat. So, mumu men should go think about their lives. It takes two to tango. Leave Linda alone. Go face your life.”.

‘You’re A Threat To Osinbajo’, Buhari Tells Female Lawmakers Seeking Post Of Vice-President In 2019

Posted: 25 May 2018 10:58 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari has told the female members of the state Houses of Assembly nationwide that their request to have the post of the vice president reserved for women is a direct threat to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari said this on Friday when members of the Conference of Nigeria Female Parliamentarians visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during which they urged him to consider picking a female running mate for the 2019 presidential election.

Apart from the vice president slot, the female legislators also asked Buhari to make it compulsory for one out of three senators produced by each state of the federation to be a woman.

They also demanded that three out of nine members of the House of Representatives from each state should be a woman.

The leader of the delegation, Mrs. Elizabeth Ative, made the demands on behalf of her colleagues.

Ative said, “Currently, many African and European nations are daily finding ways to include more women in governance.

“Some have elected or appointed women as heads of state, prime ministers, heads of foreign ministries and other key positions of decision making.

“It will not be out of place, Your Excellency, for women to be given such opportunities in our dear nation. Even God created them male and female.”

Ative also claimed that female politicians are being marginalised by men. She, however, commended Buhari for what he called his “integrity.”

In his response, Buhari jocularly told the women that their demand for a female vice president was a threat to the current holder of the office, Yemi Osinbajo.

“It is a pity that the vice president is not here; but I am sure the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will brief him that his position is (being) threatened,” the President replied.

Buhari also said that he had no constitutional powers to grant the third request that a particular number of federal lawmakers produced by each state should be women.

He said only a military dictator could make such a pronouncement.

“I am not all that powerful (such) that when I talk, it becomes a decree. As I said, it is only the vice president that is threatened,” he said.

He, however, thanked the women for their support and urged them to continue, especially as he has declared his intention to seek a re-election.

He also said that there was no truth in their belief that men were bent on marginalising women in the forthcoming general elections

Osinbajo was not present at the meeting which Buhari had with the female lawmakers.

Armed police officers on Thursday stormed the residence of a former adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta affairs, Kingsley Kuku, in Arogbo, Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The gun wielding police officers, about 20, shot continuously into the air to scare members of the small community before breaking into the house to ransack it.

Mr Kuku had issues of corruption with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) relating to the administration of the Amnesty Programme of the Jonathan administration which he directly supervised. He is believed to have gone into hiding in a foreign country to avoid prosecution.

The shooting caused serious panic among the residents of the town, forcing many of them to run away from the community.

A resident told journalists that the police told them they were searching for kidnappers.

“They broke into every room and everywhere in Kuku’s house, claiming to search for kidnappers,” he said.

“After searching all the rooms in the house in commando-style, they left without finding anything incriminating or any kidnapper in the house.”

Confirming the operation, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Femi Joseph, said the police officers were from the the Force Headquarters, Abuja, ”on lawful mission.”

He said the action of the police officers was not in breach of any law nor the rights of any person.

Court Nullifies House Of Reps’ Suspension Of Member, Jibrin, Orders Payment Of His Allowances

Posted: 25 May 2018 01:50 AM PDT

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared unlawful the 2016 decision by the House Representatives to suspend one its members, Abdulmumin Jibrin for 180 days.

Justice John Tsoho, in a judgment on Thursday, held that the House of Reps, in suspending Jibrin beyond the 14 days allowed under its Rules, violated the House’s Rules and Jibrin’s constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of expression and fair hearing.

The judgment was on a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/CS/595/2016 filed on October 14, 2016 shortly after his suspension in September.

The judge described as laughable the decision by the House of Reps to suspend a member on the grounds that he reported cases of corrupt practices against its leadership to anti-corruption agencies.

He said, in a democracy, the lawful option opened to the House”s leadership, against who such allegations were made, was to go before the agencies to clear their names rather than resorting to undemocratic tactics.

‘Seek Foreign Help If You Can’t Stop Herdsmen Killings’ -Soyinka Tells FG

Posted: 25 May 2018 01:22 AM PDT

Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, has advised the federal government to seek assistance from the international community to end the killings by suspected herdsmen.

Soyinka described the killings in Benue and other states as ethnic cleansing, saying “there is no other word to describe it”.

The professor made the comments on Thursday while speaking in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, during the 35th anniversary of ‘Adan Wade Kohol Ga’, a novel written by of Suemo Chia.

He said: “If the government cannot cope, it should not shy away from asking for international help.

“People are dying, this government cannot cope, please just ask for international help and I know they’re ready and willing to come to our aid.

“Instead of treating the country of its cancerous disease rather, it is ringworm that is being treated.

“The killings that are taking place in Benue and other states are targeted at ethnic cleansing and there is no any other word to describe it than that.”

Soyinka said the killings would have stopped if President Muhammadu Buhari had visited the hotspots and issued warnings to herdsmen.

“We have to come together to probe the ugly situation so that the impunity which is going on in the country for long will stop,” he said.

“If the President had visited any community where lives were lost due to the killings perpetrated by the armed herdsmen and give warnings, the killings would have stopped since.”

Peace Corps Bill ‘Dies’ As Reps Fail To Override Buhari’s Veto

Posted: 25 May 2018 12:56 AM PDT

The House of Representatives’ move to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the Peace Corps Bill failed on Thursday as the lawmakers voted against the second reading of the bill in Abuja.

The bill sought to turn the Peace Corps, currently a non-governmental organisation, into a government para-military agency.

The bill, which had been passed by the National Assembly was rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari, who refused to sign it into law as the president claim that there was not enough fund to meet the demands of the corps.

Some lawmakers had planned to veto the president’s rejection.

However, on Thursday, the bill failed to pass the second reading at the House of Representatives.

The Peace Corps body has over 150,000 under its enclave that could have been employed automatically if the bill had been signed into law by Buhari.
