Poem of the day by William Cowper

Thy country, Wilberforce, with just disdain, Hears thee, by cruel men and impious, call'd Fanatic, for thy zeal to loose th' enthrall'd From exile, public sale, and slav'ry's chain. Friend of the poor, the wrong'd, the fetter-gall'd, Fear not lest labour such as thine be vain! Thou hast achiev'd a part; hast gain'd the ear Of Britain's senate to thy glorious cause; Hope smiles, joy springs, and tho' cold caution pause And weave delay, the better hour is near, That shall remunerate thy toils severe By peace for Afric, fenc'd with British laws. Enjoy what thou hast won, esteem and love From all the just on earth, and all the blest above!

Amnesty International report lacks credibility

I has reacted to a report by Human rights organisation, Amnesty International which accused the Nigerian security forces of abusing women and children taking refuge in Internally Displaced camps in the northeast. A statement signed by the media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Garba Shehu, on Thursday said the report is “inherently battling with credibility and falling vehemently short of evidential narration”. In the report titled: They Betrayed Us, Amnesty International said after having survived the brutal rule of the Boko Haram terrorists, women and children have had to face further abuse by the military in exchange for humanitarian assistance. Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, described it as “absolutely shocking that people who had already suffered so much under Boko Haram have been condemned to further horrendous abuse by the Nigerian military. AI had also accused civilian JTF members of taking advantage of hunger to coerce women to become th

The Road Not Taken - Poem by Robert Frost

Autoplay next video Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.  Robert Frost

poem of the day by hannah wilbert

Miles Away - Poem by hannah wilbert The roads look like home The streets look the same But yet I know Were not going home today Not the same as we came Its not home Were way too far Though it looks like home I know in my heart That it will never Be the same home again. I look down that long twisted road It didn't use to look this way But the news received that fateful day Was the thing that began this journey We had been through many tares and snares Things changed when you left Saying I'll see you again With tears in our eyes We had to say goodbye. For the very last time So you left Going miles away from are home where we had to stay Things gained value when you left Letters turned to gold Every sentence a story untold Of the pain and unending fight For our country, for our rights Than the letter no one wants to receive Came in the mail for me Suddenly In a flash The world became as broken glass The good turned into bad The happiness once shared Was now gloom and despair.

Violence against women focus of meeting in Italy

Image
Photo: Albin Hillert/WCC 22 May 2018 At the third meeting of the Bologna Interreligious Round Table on Religion and Violence against Women, held 2 May, participants worked with the theme: “Do the churches move? Do men move?” They explored the topic of gender violence from the perspective of religion. The event was organized by the Secretariat of Ecumenical Activities, Interreligious Observatory Against Gender Violence, Foundation for Religious Science John XXIII, and feminist theologians. After signing a Petition against Violence against Women, participants were asked to give an account for that document, its progress, and its repercussions. The discussion was also inspired by the Commission Studies of the Federation of Evangelical Churches of Italy, which leads an annual "16 days to overcome violence.” Participants explored how intercultural dialogue can explore the intersection between ecumenical and feminine practices. USA church leaders offer “reclaiming Jesus” message

Image
“We believe each human being is made in God’s image and likeness.” Photo: Albin Hillert/WCC 22 May 2018 In a video message viewed by more than 800,000 people, leaders in various USA-based churches are urging people to “reclaim Jesus” and reject narrow nationalistic and racist ideas. The video is a lead-up to a  24 May  service and candlelight vigil and procession to the White House. Rev. Dr Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, general secretary emeritus of the Reformed Church in America, said that Christian faith must never be made captive to nationalistic loyalties. “Doing so robs the gospel of its power,” he said. “Over 20 elders, holding positions of leadership in US churches, past and present, have issued a fresh confessional declaration of faith, confronting the idolatrous temptations in their nation at this perilous time. Its message transcends national boundaries, calling all Christians to ‘reclaim Jesus’ from any who would attempt to use faith for narrowly nationalistic a

22 May 2018 At a World Council of Churches (WCC) press conference at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva on 15 May, two senior officers from the Geneva police force outlined security arrangements for the Pope’s historic visit to Geneva on  21 June , offering reassurances that the police are more than ready and well-equipped for such a visit. The priority for Lieutenant-Colonel François Waridel, head of operations of the Geneva Cantonal Police and Major Patrick Puhl, superintendent of the traffic police, was ensuring both the safety of the general public and a successful and safe visit by His Holiness. They stressed they could rely on the collaboration of the WCC, the host of the Pope’s visit, and others involved in making the day a success. That also includes police forces from Canton Vaud, neighbouring French police forces, security officers from Vatican City, and of course the public. The police outlined the infrastructure that would be placed around the city to obviate any

‘ I Regret Supporting Saraki To Become Senate President, He Betrayed Us’ -Ali Ndume

Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno south, says he regrets supporting Bukola Saraki to emerge senate president. Speaking on Hard Copy, a Channels Television programme, the lawmaker accused Saraki of targetting those who oppose him. In March 2017, the lawmaker was suspended for “embarrassing”   Saraki and Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west. Ndume had demanded that the upper legislative chamber investigate the allegation that a vehicle imported without appropriate customs documents belong to Saraki while he also moved for a probe into the allegations of certificate forgery levelled against Melaye. When asked If he regrets supporting the senate president, he said: “Yes, I do.  Look at the senate now, we have been reduced to unbearable level of integrity, just because of few people, few person, that is wrong. “I don’t want to be individualistic about it. We put the leadership there for Saraki; if you want me to be specific about it, and then it turns out to be anothe

‘Western Countries Are More Corrupt Than African Nations’, says Falana

Image
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), yesterday cautioned western countries to stop labeling Africa as a corrupt continent, saying they were more corrupt. His verdict was contained in a paper titled: Human Rights issues surrounding The Non-Return Of Assets To Countries Of Origin, which he delivered at the 8th Annual Conference of Anti-corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa in Abuja. His words: “London is the center of global corruption. The banks of western countries receive and keep stolen wealth from Africa and other developing countries.“Western governments conveniently hid behind the free movement of capital ideology to fold their arms and turn the other way for many years after the end of the Cold War. “Former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, whose family name was listed in the Panama papers had the temerity to label Nigeria as a fantastically corrupt country.“The Abacha loot of about $5 billion has been traced to banks in Switzerland, United Kingdom, United St

In an exclusive chat with Daily Sun, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Akpandem James, said the N501 billion addition by the legislature might not be feasible. Udoma added that the National Assembly would have to tell Nigerians if they have discovered another revenue stream unknown to the Federal Government to cover the raise. “My brother, when we see the details, we will be in a better position to know how they came about it. We will see if they have discovered another revenue stream, which we were not aware of, or just relying on increased crude oil price,” he said. The Appropriation Bill was increased from the N8.612 trillion proposed by Preside

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, led the Nigerian delegation to China for the signing of the 2.5 billion dollars deal on April 27.
